What is a long code?

A long code, also known as a long number, is a 10-digit phone number used to send and receive messages. Long codes are not suitable for large-scale SMS marketing efforts as messages from these numbers are more likely to be filtered as spam.

Still, requesting a long code can be a good idea when offering 1-on-1 customer service or setting up an internal texting network for your team.

If you do decide to use a long code as your default sending number, you can request it in Klaviyo and use it to message subscribers in the UK, Ireland, and Australia.

Long code vs. short code

A short code is a 5- or 6-digit number used to send SMS and MMS messages. Here are 4 ways long codes differ from short codes:

  1. Phone carriers encourage businesses to send mass SMS campaigns using short codes, and messages from these numbers are less likely to be filtered as spam. In contrast, sending too many messages from a long code is considered suspicious, so carriers may mark them as spam and prevent them from reaching your audience.
  2. Short codes offer much higher throughput than long codes. This means you can send more messages per second, making short codes ideal for SMS marketing.
  3. Short codes are more memorable than long codes and can be customized to reflect your brand. For example, an ecommerce brand selling footwear can use “74637” for a short code corresponding to “SHOES” on a mobile keypad. Such customized short codes are called vanity short codes.
  4. While not preferred for SMS marketing, long codes can be used for phone calls and messaging. In comparison, short codes can only send and receive SMS and MMS messages.
