What is a promo code?

A promo code is a word or combination of words and numbers that unlocks access to a discount or another perk for your online store.

While seasonal promo codes—ones for Black Friday, for example—are the most familiar, you can also set them up when someone takes an action on your website, such as:

  • Registering an account
  • Joining your email list
  • Making their first purchase

In Klaviyo, there are two types of promo codes:

  1. Static: A code that every customer can use and share with others.
  2. Dynamic: A code that is specific to each customer and can’t be shared.

How to use promo codes

To successfully use promo codes in your marketing initiatives, follow these steps:

  1. Choose your promo code offer: Based on your products and target audience, choose the perks your promo code will unlock—for example, a percentage discount or free shipping.
  2. Customize your promo code: Make sure your promo code accurately reflects your offer. For example, if you’re sending a first-order promo code to someone who just joined your email list, your code might read “WELCOME10.”
  3. Target the right audience: Segment your audience and send personalized promo codes to relevant groups of subscribers. For example, create an audience segment of people whose birthdays are coming up and send them a special birthday promo code.
  4. Set an expiration date: Clearly limit the duration of your promo code offer to spark urgency and encourage your customers to make a purchase.
