What is a setup wizard?

A setup wizard is a step-by-step interface designed to guide users through installing and configuring software or a program. It simplifies the installation process by breaking down complex tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, often with user-friendly instructions and prompts, where people can make selections, input information, and review settings before finalizing the setup.

A setup wizard can be used for:

  1. Setting up an account: It can help visitors create an online account and configure the initial settings.
  2. Managing preferences: It can describe each option and help users select the most suitable ones.
  3. Adding a payment method: It can offer an option to connect a bank account or link a default payment method to the user account.
  4. Integrating platforms: It can help people connect the platforms and migrate data between them.
  5. Connecting accounts: It can serve to connect social media accounts to other platforms.
  6. Changing security settings: It can simplify the process of updating passwords and setting up multi-factor authentication.

How to use the Klaviyo setup wizard

1. Connect your ecommerce platform

Start by connecting your ecommerce platform. The Klaviyo setup wizard will attempt to detect it automatically, whether you’re using Shopify, BigCommerce, or another platform. If we can’t detect the store, you’ll need to connect it manually or skip this step and connect your ecommerce platform at a later point.

If Klaviyo detects your ecommerce store successfully or you input your store URL manually, the platform will immediately attempt to detect and extract your brand’s colors, fonts, logos, and social links too. All your branding information will automatically be saved to your Klaviyo account, allowing you to start building email templates effortlessly after you complete the setup.

2. Choose your list size

Choose the option from the setup wizard that best matches the size of your email subscriber list. This will configure your account based on your specific needs. If you’re unsure how big your subscriber list is, check your ecommerce platform or previous email sending platform for exact numbers.

3. Add your business address

Provide your business address to comply with international anti-spam regulations. Make sure all required fields are filled in correctly before proceeding.

4. Input your sender information

Enter your sender name and email address, which will be displayed in your subscribers‘ inboxes. Ensure this information is accurate to establish trust with your audience and different inbox providers.

5. Verify your email address

After you’ve added your email address, check your inbox for a verification email from Klaviyo. The confirmation link expires after 72 hours, so make sure you confirm your email address in the setup wizard to get started with Klaviyo. If you can’t find the confirmation email in your inbox, check your spam folder or ask the wizard to resend it.

What to do once you set up your Klaviyo account

Once your account is up and running, you can:

1. Set up onsite and product tracking

Add tracking codes to monitor on-site activity and viewed products. Platforms like Shopify and BigCommerce handle this automatically, while others may require manual setup using Klaviyo’s JavaScript snippet.

2. Customize your email templates

After configuring your account, Klaviyo will try to automatically import your brand’s visual identity. You can also customize the appearance of your emails manually by:

  • Uploading your brand’s logo
  • Choosing colors for headers, body, buttons, and links
  • Picking a default font
  • Adding social links

3. Check your pre-populated lists and segments

Klaviyo will automatically populate several default lists and segments in your account to help you get started with your sending strategy:

  1. Preview list: This list contains yourself and any other members of your business who need to receive live test campaign previews before the campaigns are rolled out to your subscribers.
  2. New subscribers: This list is populated with subscribers who’ve opted to receive your messages in the last 2 weeks. After that time, they are filtered out of the list. Note that if you’ve connected your ecommerce platform or imported your email list in the last 2 weeks, all those contacts will appear on this list.
  3. Engaged: The engaged segment won’t be populated before you’ve sent your first email with Klaviyo. After that, it will allow you to see which of your contacts have opened or clicked your emails in the last 30, 60, or 90 days.
  4. Email list: This is your main email list that includes all your existing contacts, as well as all new subscribers over time.

4. Set up flows and campaigns

Once everything is set up, you can move on to browsing Klaviyo’s features and functionalities and set up your email and SMS flows.

Use pre-built flow templates or create your own to engage your audience effectively. Set up automated flows such as welcome emails, abandoned cart reminders, or post-purchase follow-ups to generate revenue and improve customer experience.
