What is an image URL?

An image URL is a web address for an image that can be found online. When you type an image URL into your browser’s address bar, the browser retrieves the image and displays it without you having to download it.

Image URLs often end with image extension names, such as .png, .jpg, or .gif. Here’s an example:

https://www.yourwebsite.com/images/photo.jpg

To get an image URL, right-click on an image online and click “Copy Image Address.” Note that you can’t retrieve an image URL for a picture stored on your local machine. You must upload it to an image hosting website or your content management system for it to have a URL.

How to use image URLs for marketing

Image URLs allow you to embed visuals into your marketing emails and MMS messages to make them more engaging. Here are 4 ways you can incorporate images into your digital marketing strategy:

  1. Use an image to sign off: Replace a text-based signature with an image to build brand identity.
  2. Send personalized product recommendations: Add personalized product recommendations with high-quality images to increase email engagement.
  3. Launch products with MMS: Add images or gifs to product launch MMS messages to show the core benefits of your products or educate people on how to use them.
  4. Decorate seasonal messages: Use holiday-specific images to make seasonal messages more engaging.

The benefits of using images in emails and MMS messages

  • Images build your brand identity over time: Every image communicates something about your brand, whether it’s about the quality of your products, your audience, or how your brand can solve problems for your customers.
  • Images educate your audience: Images and gifs can show your product solving a problem for your audience, rather than just telling them how with words.
  • Your audience can see themselves in your images: Images allow your audience to envision themselves using your product.
